Good morning! Ali Vallarta here. We are working on a holiday gift guide for the City Cast Salt Lake podcast and could use your help.

What are some of your local go-to’s under $40? Or, something you think every Salt Laker should be gifted? We'd love to feature your suggestion on the show.

What Salt Lake's Talking About

Downtown's Revival

New research has dispelled the widely shared stat that downtown Salt Lake City recovered from the pandemic at 139% of pre-pandemic economic activity. The University of Toronto now says it’s closer to 82%. With this news, the editors of Building Salt Lake have some bold ideas for Mayor Erin Mendenhall’s second term. The mayor said she plans to share her vision for the next four years in January. [Building Salt Lake, X]

Statue of Liberty, Utah Edition

State leaders, including Gov. Spencer Cox, are growing enthusiastic about bringing a 300-foot statue to the future site of The Point, a large-scale development at the site of the former Utah State Prison. If erected at the point of the mountain (aka where Salt Lake County meets Utah County), the Statue of Responsibility would be the west coast companion to the Statue of Liberty. [KSL]

High Drama On the Low Seas

There are two things that keep a Salt Laker up at night: the crisis at the Great Salt Lake and the retribution of the Utah Legislature. And now both are playing out in the saga of Utah Lake, the freshwater body connected to the GSL by the Jordan River. Yikes. Beneath the pond scum lies a tale of back-room scheming and vengeance, so why aren’t more people up in arms? [City Cast Salt Lake 🎧]

Fake Islands and Real Revenge on Utah Lake

Just south of Salt Lake County lies Utah Lake, a freshwater body connected to Great Salt Lake via Jordan River that you might know for its summer algal blooms. But beneath the pond scum lies a tale of back-room scheming and vengeance. Salt Lake Tribune reporter Leia Larsen has been digging into the muck around Lake Restoration Solutions’ islands project and shares her findings with host Ali Vallarta.

You can't make this stuff up

Hot tip: We are expecting an announcement today about Salt Lake’s bid for the 2030 or 2034 Winter Olympics 🏔️
