What Austin's Talking About

🇺🇲 Biden Drops Out

Whew. Anyone catch the news yesterday? President Biden announced he’s no longer running for re-election. I’m reading this story and revisiting the distant memory from earlier this month of Austin’s U.S. Rep. Lloyd Doggett being first in Congress to call for Biden to step down. [Austin American-Statesman]

  • Doggett, one of Texas’ 200+ delegates to the Democratic National Convention in August, is now calling for an open convention. Other Texas delegates are backing Vice President Kamala Harris. [The Texas Tribune]

🎙️ Play Ball!

The University of Texas at Austin is in the Southeastern Conference. What does that mean? City Cast Austin Host Nikki DaVaughn is joined by Austin American-Statesman Sports Reporter Danny Davis to break down the university’s move to the SEC. [City Cast Austin]

Where Is This?

Congratulations to Theresa Laguna for guessing last week’s photo correctly! Laguna was the only one to guess Windy Point Park on Lake Travis.

Windy Point Park is one of my favorite, lesser known Austin swimming spots. (Kelsey Bradshaw/City Cast Austin)

On to this week’s photo:

A piece of art shaped like what appears to be a bug and created with colorful mosaic tiles sits on a grass patch in the middle of a road.

Hint: This is a piece of art in Austin, Texas. (Kelsey Bradshaw/City Cast Austin)

A black stage in the shape of a uterus faces a crowd of people. The arena is lit up with hot pink lights.

👋 Before we part, a quick Missy Elliot review from City Cast Austin Executive Producer Eva Ruth Moravec: “Missy Elliott's Out of This World Tour show, with Timbaland, Ciara and Busta Rhymes on Thursday was a slightly disappointing night of nostalgia for this elder millennial. The Moody Center was packed and vibrant, and the tour dancers, stars, and special effects were incredible, but it felt more like a club spinning early 2000s-era hits than a concert as Elliott flipped through segment after segment of her many hits rather than showcasing full songs. Even so, Elliott performed incredibly well on her first-ever headlining tour, and on a uterus-shaped stage, to boot.”
