December miracle? All lanes of inbound Kennedy to reopen soon

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Commuters who drive the Kennedy Expressway are receiving quite the holiday gift.

Beginning Sunday morning, all lanes of the inbound Kennedy will reopen, the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) announced. The expressway will return to its pre-construction state, with the ability to flip the express lanes between inbound and outbound. The restoration will mark the completion of the first phase of IDOT’s three-year project.

For the last nine months, the inbound lanes into downtown, from the Edens Expressway junction to Ohio Street, experienced multiple lane closures. IDOT said a sequenced reopening to dismantle the work zone will start today weather permitting.

Drivers’ relief will be short-lived however. Closures will return in March, with construction work starting in the express lanes. For the project’s final phase in 2025, IDOT noted the construction will shift to the outbound Kennedy.
