What Denver's Talking About

🚫 Coloradans Granted Expanded Eviction Protections

Earlier this week, the Colorado Supreme Court ruled that the federal pandemic-era policy requiring landlords to give tenants in federally subsidized housing 30 days’ notice before eviction trumps Colorado’s 10-day notice requirement. The case was brought to the Supreme Court in response to a number of conflicting rulings that have been issued in eviction cases across Jefferson County. [Denver Post 🔒]

📚 The Bookies Is Moving!

Beloved Denver bookstore of 50-plus years, The Bookies has announced plans to move from its longtime location at 4315 E Mississippi Avenue, across the Virginia Village neighborhood, to new digs about two miles away at 2085 South Holly Street. Owner Nicole Sullivan says the new space will allow her to expand the store’s programming and services. She’s hoping to be all moved in by September. [Westword]

  • 🎧 Blast from the past: Nicole Sullivan told us about all her big ideas for the beloved bookstore back when she first took ownership in 2021 after founder Sue Lubeck passed away.

🏅 La Raza Park Deserves Its Due

North Denver’s La Raza Park is poised to become the third historic cultural district in the city. (The other two are La Alma-Lincoln Park and Five Points.) The park is being considered for the distinction because of its deep roots in Denver’s Chicano history. [Axios Denver]

Get To Know Lakewood 2.0

a snapshot of Lakewood from Google maps

Lakewood neighborhood boundaries. (Via Google Maps)

In last week’s neighborhood guide, I wrote up a simple snapshot of Lakewood. But there’s SO much more to Denver’s western neighbor, so I asked you all to send me your favorite Lakewood locales:

Dan K. recommends:

  • 🍺 Tom's Brew Shop: “For all the homebrewers out there, they've got an impressive inventory, friendly and knowledgeable staff, and even carry all-in-one kombucha kits!”

Alan B. says:

  • 🌳 Crown Hill Open Space: “It’s my go-to spot for a quiet walk any time of year, filled with seasonal birds, families fishing and walking around the large lake, and visiting the wildlife preserve.”
  • 🌯 Señor Burritos: “Makes the best chile relleno burrito around, and their green chile is worth exploring.”

Ben C. added:

  • 🥪 Carmine Lonardo's: “An Italian deli institution, been here since 1976. The folks who work there are incredibly sweet and they do all sorts of specials for holidays as well. It's truly a hidden gem!”
  • 🥐 Panaderia Rodriguez: “A delicious bakery that also somewhat secretly has what I consider to be the best menudo in town.”
  • 🇩🇰 Taste of Denmark: “A well-known spot for amazing European pastries — bringing a mixed dozen in is the fastest way to ingratiate yourself with coworkers in Lakewood.”
  • ☕ Sweet Bloom Coffee: “Award-winning coffee that is slowly growing in popularity and can be seen in more and more cafes around the city. I cannot recommend it enough.”
